The exhibition in Gallery UM will assume a dual form. The first will draw upon the scholarly findings of the other research teams as they touch upon UMPRUM and supplement it with further targeted historical and archival research. This aim will be accompanied with a scholarly catalogue providing a historical survey study of UMPRUM spanning the entire period of its existence. More specifically, it will investigate the contributions of the Prague School of Applied Arts and its successor the Academy of Applied Arts in the 1885-1990 period with regard to the development of professional training and the implementation of teaching methods. Special attention will be turned to the way in which the educational process inside the institution was used to construct national and cultural identity in the era of tensions between Czech-language and German-language culture (before 1945) and the task of the school after 1946, when until the 1990s it formed the only higher educational institution offering instruction in the applied arts.
The second form will involve conveying the research findings through exhibition and publication activities to the institution’s current instructors and students, as well as the many graduates of UMPRUM along with former instructors and other institutional employees. The aim here is to provide a scientifically reliable core for their emotional identification with the school. This publication will additionally represent UMPRUM in dialogue with the proposed history of the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU).
