Vojtěch Märc as a historian and theorist of art is intrigued by the margins of extant specialisations, disciplines, or institutions. He studied the history and theory of modern and contemporary art at UMPRUM, receiving his MA for the thesis “Výstava Orbis fictus jako videogram demokracie: Transformace technického obrazu ve věku sociální remediace, 198X–Y2K” [The Exhibition Orbis Fictus as a Videogram of Democracy: Transformation of the Technical Image in the Era of Social Remediation], (2015). His PhD dissertation was entitled Od socializace tvarů k revoluci hmoty: Design a plastické hmoty v Československu, 1945–1972 (From the Socialization of Forms to the Revolution of Matter: Design and Plastic Materials in Czechoslovakia, 2022). He was also part of the group “Atelier without a Leader” (c. 2016). For the Prague gallery Fotograf, he assisted with the curation of the exhibitions Malé dějiny fotopastí (A Brief History of the Photo Trap, 2021), Útoky na zboží (Attacks on Commodities, 2022), Úchylka měření (Deviation in Measurement, 2022), Teorie turismu (Theory of Tourism, 2023), and has also acted as curator elsewhere, e.g., at the display “Jiné vize” [Another Vision] at PAF in Olomouc (2023). Critical and other texts of his have appeared in the journals A2, Artalk.cz, Art Antiques, Flash Art, Fotograf and others. The journal of the Academy of Fine Arts, Sešit pro umění, teorii a jiné zóny, also published his study “Města na kraji nemocnic: Geopatogenní zóny jako architektonický a urbanistický fenomén” (Death by Landscape? Geo-Pathogenic Zones as Architectural and Urbanistic Phenomenon, 2021). Other studies have appeared as book chapters (e.g. Karolina Jirkalová – Veronika Rollová (eds.), The Future Is Hidden in the Present, 2022; Cyril Říha (ed.), The Rule over Your Affairs Once Lost Will Return to You, 2022) or catalogues (e.g., Jitka Hlaváčková (ed.), Věštění z noční oblohy částečně zakryté mraky: Role fotografie v postmediální době [Telling Fortunes from a Nighttime Sky Partially Hidden by Clouds: The Role of Photography in the Post-Media Age], 2022). As a member of the “Working Group for Investigation of Extrasensory Aesthetics”, he received the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize (2020). He lectures on the history of design at the North Carolina State University Center in Prague (since 2021) and on contemporary art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (since 2022).
