Jan Čumlivski graduated from the Charles University Faculty of Arts in Hungarian linguistics and cultural anthropology as well as from the Studio of Type Design and Typography at UMPRUM under František Štorm, Luboš Drtina, and Karel Haloun. His PhD studies at the latter institution were completed with his dissertation Prosta Haná tatar vrahů on the questions of fraktur lettering. At present, he is the head of the Studio of Type Design and Typography (along with Filip Kraus). He is active in book design, both in graphic and text aspects, and has been co-author and editor, e.g., of the publication Codex Aigas (2019), the Baedekr series for the festival Tabook (2013—2021) and others. He has had an exhibition of his independent artwork in Slovakia (Drsná škola/Harsh School, Slovak National Gallery, 2017), and created a series of artists’ books – Kvartira 77 (2004), Ni čest, ni slávu / Weder Ruhm, noch Ehre (2005), Palmáre (2007), Union – Ideální stát (2008), Kolchoz 2047 (2010), Jesus Gym (2010), Střed (2011), Žár (2014), Póvl (2017) among others.
